DEPARTMENT
The internship will be at the department Rigid Packaging Technology, Application Development & Industry Solution, SABIC. One of the challenges is to develop novel material and application solutions to achieve circular economy. Minimize plastic waste.
JOB PURPOSE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Background of the project:
- Replace of metal spring in pump dispensers to enable all plastic design;
- Mono-material design to enable recycling of pump dispensers in plastic waste stream.
- Sustainability and circular economy.
The objective of this study is to:
- Explore and understand about the key material characteristics to enable a durable plastic spring
- Screen, benchmark and identify potential materials from SABIC PP/PE portfolio for potential spring applications.
The main tasks could include
- Literature study of articles/prior arts to create a baseline of material selection and test proposal.
- Identify the suitable material characterization, processing and testing methods.
- Pre-selection of potential PP/PE materials
-
Benchmarking of the selected materials to assess the spring performance with representative testing methods, for example
- Material analysis, for example GPC, DSC, DMA, etc.
- Part processing, for example injection molding.
- Mechanical testing, for example tensile test, compression test, flexural test, creep/fatigue test, etc.
- Fatigue testing
- Data analysis and results reporting
REQUIREMENTS
- 3rd or 4th years bachelor students or Master students of Chemical/Material Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
- Sufficient Dutch and English (spoken and written) are a must
-
Most important competencies:
- General knowledge about polymers
- Material characterization
- Mechanical testing
- Excel
- Powerpoint
