Sheep Farmer - Full time, permanent position. Thallon, Qld

$95,000 per annum plus superannuation and accommodation

We are a family farming operationlocated 64 km from St.George (Queensland) with an aggregation of 12,000 hectares. Our operation includes 6,000 white dorper ewes,150 rams, commercial ram production, lamb feed lotting and fodder cropping.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated sheep farmer who is passionate about livestock as well as the long-term sustainability of our farm. Reporting to the farm owners, your input into the day-to-day management and forward business planning will be highly valued and a key part of your role. You will be encouraged & given the opportunity to attend relevant workshops/short courses when they are offered.

The role would suit a person who has significant managerial or decision-making experience and who wishes to gain further knowledge building their career in the prime lamb industry.

Position responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee the farm; plan and supervise all necessary farm duties including drenching, vaccinating and mustering.
  • Planning on farm profitability, farm budget and feedlot planning.
  • Breeding of meat sheep for purposes of a self-replacing flock and for prime lamb production.
  • Participate in breeding, selection and purchase of rams.
  • Selection of ewes for sale to other farms as breeding stock.
  • Monitoring meat market prices for sale.
  • Ethical raising of sheep in accordance with our high farm values.
  • Keep track of health and overall condition of our flock and pasture and take appropriate action as required.
  • Ensure our sheep have access to pastures, fodder crops and supplementary feed in accordance with their needs to ensure they are in excellent condition at all times.
  • Inspect the farm on a daily basis and advise our station hands about any required tasks to be completed.
  • Manage and identify biosecurity risk.
  • Accurate recording of livestock numbers and movements and recording of husbandry procedures undertaken.
  • Supervise farm employees, labourers and contractors and provide them with training as required.
  • Overseeing operation and maintenance of farm machinery, quads and motorbikes.
  • Overseeing and directing all other aspects of property management including fencing, water maintenance, basic repairs, and maintenance.
  • Plan transport of sheep.
  • Herd management using appropriate IT systems.

The desired applicant will possess the following skills, experience, and attributes to align with this business.

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and / or at least five years of relevant experience
  • Have a strong interest in sheep production systems & in prime lamb production
  • Tech savvy or willingness to learn eg TruTest, & assist in setting up & using a farm app such as AgriWEb. Be able to record & sort stock data on Excel.
  • A strong work ethic with the ability to work unsupervised and show initiative.
  • The ability to work cooperatively with other team members.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to sometimes unpredictable and fast changing situations while maintaining a positive attitude throughout.
  • Work calmly & use low stress techniques with stock.
